We are thrilled to share that Komera Canada is supporting 10 new students in secondary school in Rwanda!
Of the new class of 23 students, Komera Canada will be supporting Marie Alice, Julienne, Phiona, Tabita, Solange, Hanifer, Pacific, Denyse, Clemantine, and Albertine. All 23 scholars were chosen from a highly qualified pool of applicants. Though it was a difficult decision for the Komera team during the selection process, we feel confident that each girl was selected based on her vulnerability, her national exam scores, her family’s access, and most of all, her potential. Each scholar demonstrates high aptitude and eager willingness to begin her journey as a Komera scholar, learning about leadership and advocacy, as well as any subject of her choosing.
This group of young women is special. Each student was enrolled at Fawe Girls School, a boarding school close to Komera’s headquarters in Rwinkwavu, and so far they are forming a strong and loving family at school. They engage in extracurricular sports together and are supporting each other to study hard. In April during a school break, they will attend their first Komera Leadership Camp, which is a 5 day series of workshops for all 70 Komera scholars in secondary school intended to further foster their growth into strong female leaders!
In addition to school materials and uniforms, each girl receives health insurance and a designated Komera mentor. Mentors help students succeed while they are away at boarding school. They support good study habits and help girls navigate a variety of social and emotional challenges, in and out of the classroom. By providing and committing to holistic care, we see our scholars flourish in school. Further, the guardians of each scholar are invited to join the Komera Parent Cooperative, ensuring that the whole family has the opportunity to take on new challenges with the support of the community to build their own bright future!
Komera Canada is committed to seeing these young women through to their graduation! They have three years until they complete secondary school, and we will be with them every step of the way. We cannot wait to see what they can accomplish, and we hope you will follow their journey with us!
